En 1971 fue creado lo que ahora se conoce como CENTRO ECOLÓGICO AKUMAL (CEA) con un enfoque orientado en favor de la comunidad, con la característica particular de no poder otorgar beneficios remanentes a persona alguna, es decir ser una agrupación sin fines de lucro y al mismo tiempo fomentar el turismo a través de actividades deportivas y sociales, pero principalmente para apoyar a la comunidad incipiente de aquella época que contribuyó a sentar las bases que más tarde darían lugar al primer destino turístico del Estado de Quintana Roo.
Como parte del vertiginoso desarrollo turístico de la zona de Akumal y en respuesta a la necesidad de dar sustentabilidad al lugar es gracias a la suma de esfuerzos conjuntos de sus asociados, miembros de la Mesa Directiva y todos y cada uno de los trabajadores de esta asociación, ahora sus actividades cuentan con diversos programas y proyectos con financiamiento propio y de agencias nacionales e internacionales para incidir de manera directa e indirecta en políticas públicas que propicien una mejora en la calidad de vida de los akumalenses y tulumnenses a través de la protección de sus ecosistemas en aras de preservar un ambiente sano que indudablemente constituye un derecho fundamental de toda sociedad.
In 1971, what is now known as CENTRO ECOLÓGICO AKUMAL (CEA) was created with a focus oriented in favor of the community, with the particular characteristic of not being able to grant any remaining benefits to any person, that is, to be a non-profit group and at the same time promoting tourism through sports and social activities, but mainly to support the incipient community of that time that contributed to lay the foundations that would later give rise to the first tourist destination in the State of Quintana Roo.
As part of the vertiginous tourist development of the Akumal area and in response to the need to give sustainability to the place it is thanks to the sum of joint efforts of its associates, members of the Board of Directors, and each and every one of the workers of this association, now its activities have various programs and projects with its own financing and from national and international agencies to influence directly and indirectly on public policies that promote an improvement in the quality of life of Akumalenses and Tulumnenses through the protection of their ecosystems in order to preserve a healthy environment that undoubtedly constitutes a fundamental right of every society.
