Why join the VT group to protect turtles? What makes it special? Is it easy, fun, dynamic, committed?
I have always been interested in conservation and I was planning a trip to Cuba for some conservation volunteer work, but the programme was cancelled because of the COVID pandemic. So instead I started looking for conservation volunteer opportunities near Playa del Carmen, where I live. I came across CEA online and was immediately drawn to their turtle program. I worked with leatherback turtles before as a volunteer, and that was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, so I got in touch with CEA. It is hard and dirty work on the beach, but it is so satisfying. Every single big momma turtle and little hatchling make it more than worth it. They are such beautiful and amazing animals and it is an awesome experience seeing them in their natural environment and being able to contribute to the protection of these endangered animals.
What activity do you do? What is your role at CEA’s Tortuguero camp?
I do the night shift, keeping an eye on the momma turtles that come up on the beach to nest, making sure there aren’t any loud noises, too many people or bright lights on the beach, so they can nest in peace. I mark the nests and collect some data on the turtles. I also look after the hatchlings when they hatch at night, making sure they make it to the sea and I am also involved in nest cleaning during the day. A bit of everything really.
How important do you think the work of the VT is?
It is absolutely vital, especially this year with all the restrictions from the pandemic. Without the VT’s there would be no turtle camp this year.
There are many different NGOs… what made you fall in love with this project?
I love sea turtles and this is close to home, which makes it more personal. Also, being on the beach at night with these majestic animals is an amazing experience and they really need our help with all the challenges they are facing.
When you come home after spending a morning helping nesting moms… what are you taking with you? What does it bring you on a personal level?
It is such a satisfying experience. It makes me feel good.
What qualities do you think it takes to volunteer in the association?
You should not be afraid of hard work and getting dirty. It takes dedication and love for turtles and the natural environment.
Do you remember your first day as a volunteer? How was your experience?
On my first day, I joined some existing volunteers on the beach where I could see the existing nests and learn about how they work. It was great and I was excited to get started.
And how was your first contact with a turtle? What surprised you the most?
I worked with leatherback turtles before, so it wasn’t completely new to me. But every time I see a turtle coming up the beach I am in awe. It’s amazing what a mess they can make on the beach, digging their huge holes and spraying sand everywhere!
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering or not? Would you encourage him to do it?
Definitely! It is the experience of a lifetime. Get ready to be amazed and humbled.
If you could change something to improve the CEA turtle camp, what would it be?
It is very difficult to say, as this year the turtle camp is not what it usually is, because of the pandemic.
What message would you like to share with the readers of this short review?
If you have the time and are physically fit to walk on the beach, get in touch with CEA to join their turtle camp. It is very important and one of the most amazing experiences you will have. Don’t hesitate!

¿Porqué te enlistaste como Voluntourist en el Campamento Tortuguero de CEA?
Siempre he estado interesada en el tema de conservación y me encontraba planeando un viaje a Cuba para realizar un trabajo voluntario de conservación, pero el programa se canceló debido a la pandemia de COVID. Fue entonces que comencé a buscar oportunidades de voluntariado de conservación cerca de Playa del Carmen, donde vivo. Me encontré con CEA en línea e inmediatamente me sentí atraído por su programa de tortugas. Hice voluntariado y me tocó trabajar con tortugas Laúd, esa fue una de las experiencias más increíbles de mi vida, así que me puse en contacto con CEA. Es un trabajo duro y sucio en la playa, pero es muy satisfactorio. Cada tortuga grande y cría pequeña hace que valga la pena. Son animales tan hermosos e increíbles y es una experiencia increíble verlos en su entorno natural y poder contribuir a la protección de estos animales en peligro de extinción.
¿Qué actividades realizas? ¿Cuál es tu papel en el campamento de tortugas marinas de CEA? Hago el turno nocturno, vigilando a las tortugas mamá que suben a la playa para anidar, asegurándome de que no haya ruidos fuertes, demasiadas personas o luces brillantes en la playa, para que puedan anidar en paz. Marco los nidos y recopilo algunos datos sobre las tortugas. También cuido de las crías cuando nacen por la noche, asegurándome de que lleguen al mar y también participo en la limpieza de los nidos durante el día. Un poco de todo realmente.
¿Qué tan importante crees que es el trabajo de los VT?
Es absolutamente vital, especialmente este año con todas las restricciones de la pandemia. Sin los VT no habría campamento de tortugas este año.
Hay muchas ONG diferentes … ¿qué te hizo enamorarte de este proyecto?
Me encantan las tortugas marinas y esto está cerca de casa, lo que lo hace más personal. Además, estar en la playa por la noche con estos majestuosos animales es una experiencia increíble y realmente necesitan nuestra ayuda con todos los desafíos que enfrentan.
Cuando llegas a casa después de pasar una mañana ayudando a las madres que anidan … ¿qué te llevas a nivel personal?
Es una experiencia tan satisfactoria. Me hace sentir bien.
¿Qué cualidades crees que se necesitan para ser voluntario en la asociación?
No debes tener miedo al trabajo duro y a ensuciarte. Se necesita dedicación y amor por las tortugas y el medio ambiente natural.
¿Recuerdas tu primer día como VT? ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia?
En mi primer día, me uní a algunos de los voluntarios en la playa donde pude ver los nidos que habían en su momento y pude apreciar cómo funcionan como equipo. Fue genial y estaba emocionada de comenzar.
Y, ¿cómo fue tu primer contacto con una tortuga?
Antes trabajaba con tortugas laúd, así que no era completamente nuevo para mí. Pero cada vez que veo una tortuga que viene a la playa, me asombra. ¡Es increíble el desastre que pueden hacer en la playa, cavando sus enormes agujeros y rociando arena por todas partes!
¿Qué le dirías a alguien que está considerando ser Voluntourist?
¡Seguro! Es la experiencia de toda una vida. Prepárate para sorprenderte.
Si pudieras cambiar algo para mejorar el campamento de tortugas CEA, ¿qué sería?
Es muy difícil decirlo, ya que este año el campamento de tortugas no es lo que suele ser, debido a la pandemia.
