Save the Palms

March 24, 2003

In February 2003 Seth Ramirez came to CEA and spoke about Lethal Yellowing. He has studied this disease and how it affects the palm trees for many years. After years of research, he finally discovered a product that will save the life of the palm tree for one year. Yearly application will save the tree indefinitely.

Lethal Yellowing has its origins in the Caribbean Islands, and for many years it has affected the Coconut Palm trees in the Pacific coast of Africa and Central America. The Coconut Palms on the coast of Florida and Texas are completely devastated. In Mexico the Lethal Yellowing has destroyed all the plantations in Quintana Roo, Yucatan, Campeche, part of Veracruz, and is now affecting Oaxaca, Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco.

How to recognize a sick palm tree?

  • The coconuts fall prematurely
  • Necrosis of the flowers
  • The leaves turn yellow

The cost to vaccinate a palm tree is $150 Pesos per year ($15.00 US dollars).

If you are interested in more information or in saving the palm trees that are on your beach or in your community, please contact Seth Ramirez at 044 984 80 6 77 29 or contact Nadia at The CEA Center. If you would like to adopt a tree to save for 1 (one) year, please contact CEA at info@ceakumal.org .

Thanks for your interest.
