Laura Bush was born in Mexico City, and raised in the U.S. and Canada. She graduated from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto with a Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. After two years working as a travel Agent, she moved to Akumal with her husband David, to help run the family business, Hotel Club Akumal Caribe, a 61-room hotel on the main beach of Akumal. The hotel has been in the family since the '60's, and she has been running it since 1984. Her father, Paul Bush Romero, founded Akumal with a clear vision of low-density development, with clearcut zoning restrictions. The aesthetics and beauty of Akumal and the conservation of its natural resources were always a priority. Laura has wanted to follow in her father's footsteps, showing the same dedication to the well-being of Akumal that he had.

With the onslaught of mass tourism, the formation of the Centro Ecológico Akumal became even more important to maintain equilibrium between development and preserving Akumal. The land that Laura's father had formerly donated to Club de Yates Akumal Caribe, a non-profit club, became Centro Ukana I, and Laura has been participating on the Board of Directors since its formation.

She has participated in various other community boards, and is currently sitting on the Local Bilingual school board, where her 12-year-old son is enrolled.

Laura's goal is to improve on the property's waste handling and become a true example to other resorts and businesses. In the meantime, education and awareness are ongoing at The CEA Center, and through the support of many people and organizations, Laura is certain that Centro Ecológico Akumal will help make a difference and Akumal will be an example of an environmentally well-planned community for the entire coast.
