Organizational FAQs
What is CEA?
CEA stands for Centro Ecológico Akumal, a non-profit conservation organization, working on the Mexican Caribbean to research the impact of development on the regional ecosystems; to report findings and their significance to the public through education; and, through education, to influence public policy.
How long has CEA been around?
In 2008, we are celebrating 15 years of research, education and advocacy in Akumal, working to understand better the natural elements that make this place so beautiful, to raise awareness about how to protect it, and to invite others to join us in our efforts.
What programs does CEA have?
We have five on-going programs: Marine and Coastal Protection (Miguel Ángel Maldonado, Coordinator); Reef Monitoring, as part of Marine and Coastal Protection, (Joel Ortega, Manager); Sea Turtle Research and Protection (Armando Lorences, Coordinator); Water Management (Edith Sosa, Coordinator); Environmental Sustainability (Director Paul Sánchez-Navarro, Coordinator); Environmental Education; and Communications (Alma Boada, Manager).

Issue FAQs
What is a group of turtles called?
A group of turtles is called a bale.
When is turtle season and is it okay to snorkel at night?
Turtle season is May–October and we recommend no night snorkeling during that time; the activity and lights disturb and confuse the turtles.
Can fish or fish products be bought on the beach in Mexico?
No. Fish commerce is regulated in Mexico and sales on the beach are illegal. Please look for a local or regional fishing cooperative outlet to buy fresh fish. (Tulum and Playa del Carmen have them.)
Is fishing allowed from the beach?
No fishing is allowed within 250 meters of beaches used by swimmers; this applies to all types of fishing. Fishing with a line and tackle is allowed in other areas (where there are no hotels or regular swimming areas) for personal consumption only, not commercial. All fishing requires a permit. Underwater spear fishing is generally not allowed and requires a special permit.
Where is the best place to swim with dolphins for the best price?
As an ecological center working to protect the habitat, flora and fauna of the incredible Mexican Caribbean, we recommend that humans do not keep dolphins in captivity. Therefore, we cannot recommend swimming with them, especially in a time when so many companies abuse these beautiful and intelligent sea mammals.
Do jetskis have an impact on the environment?
Yes. Jetski engines are highly inefficient, very polluting, and their wakes can increase coastal erosion. They can injure wildlife, including sea turtles, and they are loud and annoying, possibly disturbing birds, fish, and other creatures. When taken to different areas, they may help spread exotic and invasive species.
