Inauguration of CEA’s New Coral Reef Mural
The main wall of the CEA Center has come alive! On November 27, a wine and cheese inauguration party was held in the CEA Center. More than 50 Akumal residents and visitors came by to meet the artist and view the 6' by 14' mural that depicts a coastal/reef ecosystem bursting with life.
Throughout the month of November, artist Lauren Floden painted details of coral reef biodiversity on the specially prepared wall in the CEA Center. Lauren was helped by local artist Juan David Pérez and visiting artist Susan Carlin, who provided expertise and energy. Thanks to fundraising efforts by Jim Petersen and Kate Neuschaefer, we were able to get the wall built and ready for painting. We are also grateful to Golden Paints for graciously donating all the paints used in the mural.
In order to depict the reef ecosystem as accurately as possible, Lauren studied what a healthy, living reef looks like. She learned to dive and spent many hours snorkeling the reefs off Akumal. Local fishermen and divers stopped by regularly to offer their knowledge on fish colors, shapes and other details, helping Lauren to realistically paint the marine life.
In spite of the fact that our reefs are in decline, Lauren was able to capture the beauty and color of a living reef. Her artwork is a reminder to all of us of what we are losing in the marine environment, and we hope that this labor of love will inspire us to better protect this very important ecosystem. Toward that end, many of the participants made contributions to CEA.
CEA thanks Lauren for donating her incredible talents to our cause. We also had a great time visiting with her support group—her mother, Nana, and sister, Tricia.
The mural has become the centerpiece of the renovations planned for the CEA Center. Please come by the Center and enjoy the fantastic artwork. If you would like to contribute, please click here for more information.
