NEW WATER ANALYSES SHOW A LARGE DROP
IN COLIFORM CONTAMINATION
AT AKUMAL SINCE 1995

A new study by CEA has shown that contamination of ground water at Akumal has dropped by fifty percent, or more, since 1995. The new study was carried out by Ms. Helen Brown, from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom with the assistance of Ms. Hilary Ritt from Georgia Tech. The study was supervised by CEA Director, Dr. Charles Shaw. The reduction in level of coliform contamination in the coastal ground water compared with analyses done in 1995 and 1996 (Shaw and Lang, 1997) is attributed to the adoption of constructed wetlands to treat sewage at Akumal.
