Celebrate by Contributing
by Paul Sánchez-Navarro, Director
As the autumn and winter holidays draw near, we’d like to ask you to donate to Centro Ecológico Akumal. In October we’ll continue to struggle with the scary threats to the coastal and marine ecosystem in the Mexican Riviera, then, in November, give thanks to the natural beauty the planet offers and, finally, in December, give gifts of our time and energy to protect this paradise into the future. Thank you.
Sea Turtle Video Coming Soon
CEA has a new documentary video of our turtle workers, better known as "tortugueros." Thanks to the great job of two Mexican students, who performed their scholastic social service with us, we had the opportunity to record in images the long nights of our people working to protect and monitor our wonderful sea turtles. Thank you Arturo Stransky and Aristóteles Molina!
Be part of this awesome experience—coming soon online!
Remember, with your donations we can keep working. Our last hatchling update for the season will be posted on our Web site in the next few days; don't miss it!
International Beach Clean-up: Smiles and Good Feelings on Akumal’s Bays
October 6 was International Beach Clean-up Day. It was a great event with many people participating. Children, locals and tourists joined us at 8 a.m. at the CEA Information Center, were divided into teams and came back with 155 kilos of garbage, 95 being recyclable and 60 non-recyclable. Local businesses provided us with food and beverages for the whole crew.
We had our traditional drawing, sand sculpture and beach football contests. The kids had fun while learning, enjoying the beauty of our bay. They also snorkeled in the allowed areas, wearing lifejackets, in groups of 8 children and 2 guides, not approaching the corals or other species, but just watching them and enjoying floating on the sea.
This day was a very good example of how well we can work together to protect Akumal today so we may have our paradise alive tomorrow.
Thanks to everyone who made this day happen: MiniSuper Chomak, El Pueblito, La Cueva del Pescador, Turtle Bay Café and Bakery, Akumal Dive Shop, Akumal Dive Center, Las Casitas Akumal, Hotel Vista del Mar, La Buena Vida, La Boutique, Oshun Joya, Ixchel Boutique, and Leticia Cordova.

Composting Toilets
Many days have passed and Akumal people are anxiously waiting the inauguration of the new composting toilets in front of our CEA Information Center. Soon they will be open, setting a good example for the sustainable development of the Riviera Maya.
International Water Quality Monitoring Day
This year CEA once again is joining forces with the International Water Quality Monitoring Day, celebrated in September. The Telesecundaria School from Akumal Pueblo and Chemuyil's high school will be participating—the reason we had to change the water sampling dates to October. We will be working with the students on October 11, 12, 15 and 16.
We invited the high schools in order to get them involved in environmental issues and to raise awareness among the youth about the environmental impact we are all causing on the hydrological system of the Yucatán Peninsula. We will be also teaching them about good practices to protect our ecosystems.
We invite you to read CEA's Water Tips and join us! For further information contact us.
Agreement With Instituto Superior de Felipe Carillo Puerto
In September CEA signed an agreement with the Instituto Superior de Felipe Carillo Puerto to strengthen our mission of educating to preserve. Thanks to everyone involved and we hope to be able to offer valuable experiences to the students of the Institute.
Help Them to Study Better
Akumal kids need help to improve their school conditions. They came to CEA, inviting us to join them and work together to make a better place for them to study. We know that you can help us make a difference. Remember that part of CEA’s work is educating to preserve. Help us protect Akumal today in order to have Akumal alive tomorrow. They will be very thankful. To see their Wish List, click here.
