CEA Memberships, Contributions and Volunteers : Turtle and Reef Protection Fund

Improved education for visitors to Akumal, to make sure they do not damage the reef or injure sea turtles. As the 2006 turtle nesting season gets underway, the members of LocoGringo.com have come up with a fantastic idea to help us with our sea turtle and coral reef protection programs. They have offered to raise funds to produce more beach signs and hotel guest information about sea turtle protection and reefs in Akumal. Thanks to their support, we will be able to warn more people not to touch or harass the turtles, in the water or nesting on the beach. We constantly must remind people that sea turtles are wild animals, in danger of extinction and in need of our help for their survival. Also, many people do not know that coral is alive—they touch it, break it or walk on it, damaging or even killing it. Signs and stickers will include information asking visitors not to touch coral or walk on the reef. With your help, we will be able to educate a greater number of visitors to Akumal.
