Maya Riviera Sea Turtle Expedition Update

Since you are a supporter of CEA’s very important sea turtle program, we would like to let you know about our exciting educational expedition studying hawksbill, loggerhead and green sea turtles. As you know from your involvement in CEA’s sea turtle program, our endangered friends have intriguing lives and a deep-rooted influence in many cultures. If you have had the opportunity to experience these magnificent creatures first-hand, you understand how special these tortugas really are.

During their nesting season, from May to October, gigantic female loggerhead and green sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. This is no small feat and no ordinary sight! This is the time of year when these creatures leave their ocean environment to drag their large bodies up the beach in search of the perfect site to place their little tortuguitas. They do this during the cover of night making it an even more special event to see.

Unfortunately, due to our human practices, we have decimated the populations of all seven species of sea turtles. As a result, we have had to intervene in order to offset some of our negative effects on their populations. This is why we have the Sea Turtle Protection Program, so that we can better understand these reptiles of the sea in order to help support a healthy population. Through the expedition, you will learn about and EXPERIENCE the lives of sea turtles while enjoying the relaxing atmosphere of the Mexican Caribbean. Your participation includes a year’s membership to CEA and will help support the Sea Turtle Monitoring Program in Akumal.

Please read the following itinerary, and we hope to see you in July! Contact Heather to make reservations.
