Juan Antonio, born December 4, 1968, is single and lives in Playa del Carmen. He finished high school at Scarsdale High, New York and at Uccle, Brussels, Belgium. He studied three semesters of oil engineering at UNAM University and completed his degree in biology at the University of Chile.
Back home, Juan Antonio joined public service at the National Institute of Ecology in Mexico City for one year. A childhood wish to live on the Mexican Caribbean coast took him to live in Playa del Carmen in 2001, where he created the municipal Environmental Office and strengthened it over the next four years.
During those years, he coordinated and managed environmental projects that included GEO Playa del Carmen, an urban environmental diagnosis financed by the PNUD–United Nations office. Also, he coordinated national and international events, training courses, seminars and educational programs.
Juan Antonio represented the local government of Solidaridad in Environmental Committees and Advisory Councils such as the Local Committee for Clean Beaches from Cancun to Tulúm, and the Marine Turtle Protection Council for the Riviera Maya.
He acts as a consultant to some local environmental Non-Governmental Organizations and participates in the editing and publication of three sustainable tourism magazines with the local authorities.
At present, he is the Property Manager for Centro Ukana I Akumal and CEA, and is in charge of the Recycling Program and Beach Certification by Mexican Law MX-AA-120-SCFI-2006. He also participates in the Akumal Bay Zoning Program (POBAk).
