Joel was born in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz on July 5, 1982. He has an undergraduate degree in biology by the Facultad de Ciencias Biológicas, from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. He divided his time in university between school and research, and it was this work in the taxonomy and systematics of Annelid Polychaeta (marine segmented worms) which gave him the chance to travel to the Mexican seas and to get his scuba diving certification. He has participated as a research and teaching assistant, an environmental advisor for private industry, and an educator with both non-governmental and governmental organizations which promote environmental education. He has now been living in the Mexican Caribbean for a year, working to conserve the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef Systems. This opportunity has allowed him to gain professional and personal experience, both as a scientific scuba diver and in marine and coastal management.
