Jim Lawrence and his wife, Jill, have been coming to Akumal since their
daughter, Kate, was an infant. Kate is now 17 years old. The Lawrences have
seen the changes over the years and are concerned, as many of us are.
Jim, however, went a step further than most and donated $10,000 to CEA, "to
use as we see fit".
This summer, Kate Lawrence joined with Ann Griffiths to create an ecological
club and a questionnaire that Kate and two Mayan teenagers, Mirjana and Landy,
used to survey young people in the Akumal Pueblo about their
environmental understanding. The results are being evaluated and it is
hoped that the program will continue as one of CEA's Action Projects to
bring a stronger collaboration between CEA Reseach and Education Programs
and the local community.
