Dr. Barkin is professor of economics at Universidad Autonoma Metorpolitana - Unidad Xochimilco (UAM). A naturalized citizen of Mexico, he is author of numerous books and scholarly papers written in both Spanish and English. He is a member of the National research Council and the Mexican Academy of Sciences. He received his doctorate in economics at Yale University. He has been a frequent visitor at CEA as part of the Cornell programs on Eco-tourism and Marine Biology. His research is designed to develop strategies to enable local communities to develop alternative strategies for sustainable management of their resources. He is currently working on a project financed by the MacArthur Foundation to examine "voluntary initiatives of corporations to promote environmental and social responsibility".
