CEA's Electronic Newsletter, Edition 6, March 2003

It’s March and Spring is officially here. For many of us this is a time of new beginnings, flowers blooming, and new life. Our goal at CEA is to save the Great Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The best way you can help is to become a member. We have recently revamped our memberships to allow you to choose what level you would like to help. To become a Supporter, Member or Nohoch* Giver (*Maya for 'Big'), please click here.

With Spring comes turtle nesting season. We are looking forward to this turtle season, and Roger and others involved in the Turtle Protection Program are working hard to make this the most successful season ever. If you have been thinking about coming to Akumal to see the turtles nest and/or hatch you will be interested in an exciting tour package that is available. To learn more please click here.

We at CEA along with those at the Akumal Pueblo School would like to thank everyone who has donated, sponsored and supported our Scholarship Program and our Akumal School Baños Program.

The Scholarship Program chose two recipients and each month they are given a small stipend to help with the costs of their education. Unfortunately, one of our recipients was in a terrible accident and is unable to return to school. Last month, at the suggestion of the principal, we decided to pass that scholarship on to her brother.

The Akumal School Baños Project funded by the Sam and Charles Foundation is moving slowly along. Unfortunately, it is behind schedule due to many unforeseen obstacles, but will be completed in the near future. These new baños will be a model to encourage others to build composting toilets or standard toilets with constructed wetlands attached to the septic systems. We are producing through a grant from National Fish and Wildlife Fund, an educational video documenting this project. The video will be available in May.

Thank you for your continued support of CEA and remember our on-line store is now open, click here to visit.
