2003 Turtle Season Updates

Turtle and Swimmer

CEA's Turtle Walks began April 23rd. Roger Villavicencio and volunteers will be patrolling the beaches looking for turtle nests and marking them from now until the end of the season. They found one nest each of the first two nights, bringing our total to 2 so far. We will update the numbers throughout the turtle-nesting season. To date we have marked 8 Loggerhead Turtle Nests. CEA offers Turtle Walks to the visitors at Akumal and the region. If you are interested, please come by The CEA Information Center to sign up. There is a $100 peso charge for the walk and the walks are limited to only 10 persons per night, so make your reservations early! E-mail Nadia Mora if you would like to make a reservation before you come to Akumal on vacation. Remember! The turtle season is from April to October and the best months to see both the mamas and hatchlings are July and August.

Protecting the turtles costs money. CEA needs to raise $10,000 US to see the program through to the end of the nesting season and you can help. To adopt a mother turtle, baby turtle or an entire nest please visit our on-line store or stop by The CEA Center.

Your tax deductible donation will go directly to nightly beach walks to mark nests, tag mama turtles and provide protection for the hatchlings making their way to the sea. To learn more about our Turtle Protection Program click here
