ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Convinced that environmental education can provide solutions to environmental problems, and considering the fast development of the "Riviera Maya," CEA has been working in many different areas such as turtle protection, coral reef monitoring and waste management in the local communities.
Recently, the tourist and community sectors of the Environmental Education Program have been expanded to include hotels, restaurants and dive shops outside Akumal. The CEA Information Center has been providing this education for the past eight years, but it has been limited to the
Akumal visitor.
In the local communities Mauricio Bautista has being working with the elementary and secondary schools at Puerto Aventuras, Akumal Poblado, Ciudad Chemuyil and Tulum.
The three action topics are:-
1. Integrated solid waste management
-
2. Natural resources and causes of their deterioration
-
3. Weather events affecting the region
The Integrated Solid Waste Management Program in the schools teaches the children the value of recycled products and how they can compost to keep the organic materials out of the waste stream, thus reducing the volume and elevating the quality of the garbage.
By Edith Sosa Bravo -
Edith Sosa Bravo and Mauricio Bautista have finalized a manual for the teachers to teach their students the CEA Environmental Education Program. With the manual, it will be possible to reach many more students in Quintana Roo.
Edith has left CEA and Akumal to return to graduate school. Mauricio will remain at CEA and continue working in Environmental Education within the Communications Program.
The scope and approach of the Environmental Education Program is undergoing changes in direction and it is anticipated that the program will be greatly expanded. Funding will be sought and a grant proposal is underway.
En "Busca de la Conciencia" is a puppet show that Maurico wrote and directed. The children in and around Akumal love it. It is a delightful piece that teaches about turtles. Feel free to use this this in your classroom. You can make puppets or have the children act it out. If your class doesn't speak Spanish, it is also a great way to add a Spanish lesson, too.
