Many have already built their own individual systems, but there are others who cannot build their own system so this project will provide the place for them. In the quarry there will be an opportunity for the local Maya, especially the women to create a cooperative of small businesses that will enable them to have an independent economic base. Fresh fish, flowers, native medicinal plants, fruit, and fresh herbs for local restaurants will be grown. The project will support its operations through the sale of compost and recyclables. This means that a very effective program of separation is essential and CEA, in conjunction with the Subcomité Plural, the recycling committee, are already creating a viable center in what was until recently the area dump.

Contamination also comes from improperly disposed of solid waste. CEA, as a member of El Subcomité Plural de Manejo de los Desechos de la Riviera Maya Sur, has supported community efforts in the creation of a model recycling program. With funds from the Summit Foundation and help from volunteers, a set of colorful recycling bins has been designed to put in public places around the Akumal area, beginning with the CEA property and Leticia Cordova provided sets for the Akumal School.

A painter from Valladolid has now begun a small business painting sets of bins to be offered for sale and it is hoped they will be put on every corner of the Akumal Poblado. Workshops on how to separate and recycle are offered, along with the bins, to residents and businesses at Akumal with the idea that the program will be replicable for other communities in Quintana Roo.

The Akumal dump has been transformed into a Recycling Center. Recently the Subcomite Plural de la Riviera Maya, the local recycling committee, was given the temporary concession for the local dump. The Comité with the support of CEA hopes to be able to keep the concession and create a model recycling center. The sales from product support the effort.
