Akumal School Baño This is an integral part of the overall CEA goal of turning off the contamination of the ground water.
The Akumal School has bathrooms, but they are wholly inadequate. Funding from the Sam and Charles Foundation will build model composting toilets and a graywater wetland for the school. In this way, the children and their parents will learn about this system, how to build, use and maintain them. Dinah Drago with NaHiXix the composting builder will be the supervisor on this project. Dinah has been involved in this system, has built many toilets throughout the state and she is willing to help train other constructors so the need for systems can be met. Credit is being sought by CEA for baños for the 1000+ residents in 250 homes in the village to build their own combination wetland and dry toilets or, if they want, a standard toilet with wetland. This is an integral part of the overall CEA goal of turning off the contamination of the groundwater. As a result, it is hoped that the poblado will be beautified, shade will grow and the road will be contained from washing away to the highway.
During construction of the banos, Lydia Pontius will videotape the process and produce a training video that will be available to other communities to see how they can build environmentally-friendly sewage treatment systems. The residents will be invited to an overview of the day's construction and discussion and questions will be encouraged. Funds from National Fish and Wildlife Foundation will pay for the production cost of the video.
By the end of the project it is hoped that the residents at Akumal Poblado will have a better understanding of waste treatment and will choose to have their own systems built. Low or no interest loans are being sought to help the community build now.
